What is a clinical trial? It is a careful study that tests a new treatment before it becomes widely available. Joining one can give you early access to new options while helping future patients. Taking part is always your choice, and it is always free to leave.
What researchers are working on now
New implant designs
Newer thumb prostheses with better materials, special coatings, and 3D-printed shapes made to fit one patient’s hand.
Biological treatments
PRP, stem cells, fat injections, and growth factors, all being tested to see if they can help worn cartilage.
Gentler surgery
Keyhole (arthroscopic) techniques and wide-awake surgery that aim for a faster, easier recovery.
How to find a trial near you
Trials are listed on public registries you can search yourself:
- ClinicalTrials.gov: search “thumb arthritis” or “trapeziometacarpal”.
- EU Clinical Trials Register for studies in Europe.
- Ask your hand surgeon whether any trial is recruiting at their centre.
This page is educational and does not recommend any specific trial. Always discuss taking part with your own doctor, who can tell you if a study is right for you.
