Not all thumb arthritis needs an operation. Many people, especially in the early stages, keep their pain under control for years with the simple treatments on this page. Below we explain what works, what does not, and what is still being studied, in plain words.
What do doctors try first?
These are the everyday treatments your doctor will usually suggest before anything else:
- A thumb brace (splint). It rests the sore joint while you use your hand, which lowers the pain.
- Hand therapy. Simple exercises make the muscles around the thumb stronger and steadier.
- Changing how you grip. Small tools and new ways of holding things take the strain off the joint.
- Pain relief tablets. Ordinary painkillers like paracetamol or anti-inflammatories help on bad days.
What about injections?
If braces and exercises are not enough, an injection into the joint can help:
- Cortisone (steroid). Good short-term relief, usually 3 to 6 months. It works less well if it is repeated too often.
- Hyaluronic acid. Some studies show it helps about as much as cortisone, with fewer side effects.
- PRP (from your own blood). Early research suggests the relief may last longer, but it is still being studied.
- Fat injection (from your own body). A newer idea that uses your own fat to cushion and calm the joint.

Common questions
Does a thumb brace really help?
Yes. Clinical trials show that thumb braces cut pain by 30 to 50 percent and make the hand work better. Custom-made braces help more than shop-bought ones. At the very least, wear one during the tasks that hurt.
How well do cortisone injections work?
Cortisone gives real relief for 3 to 6 months in about 7 out of 10 people. But having it too often (more than three times a year) can wear the cartilage faster, so it is best used to get you through a bad patch while you build up therapy.
Can I cure thumb arthritis without surgery?
There is no cure without surgery, but many people keep their symptoms under control for years with these treatments. The goal is to ease the pain and keep your hand working.
